Oh gosh, I couldn't tell you how many. They're all measured at 1/2" diameter of 16g steel in a medium sized tank. So I'd have to guess quite a few thousand but ill try to figure it out :)

My coif was around two thousand, making a chestpiece scared me because I calculated I'd need about 10-20k for that xD
I never though of making larger rings.

The larger links provide the look but not the protection for combat RP, but it looks fantastic at a festival.

But there are a ton of links still.
I think my bikini top and this tank are about the same in link composition now that I think about it. Ranging between 3700-4300

No indeed, that is a problem :P
I once made a sheet from 1cm rings in a really tight pattern. 16x4 I think is how it's called. So normal mail but with 4 rings where you'd usually put one.

It was so thick that it didn't bend in one way and behaved like a waterish substance in the other direction. :P It used about a 1000 rings in a sheet the size of two credit-cards xD But probably extremely strong and durable.

Damn I believe it. It's like some of the Byzantine weaves don't work if the gauge is too thick or rings too small.. It's tedious work.
And my, your patience must have worn thin with an intricate project like that. Definitely tedious I imagine
